Accenture provided instrumental support to USA for UNHCR and the State Department for the Partnership for Refugees, an initiative developed in 2016 to facilitate private sector commitments to support refugees in the U.S. and around the world. Combining expertise in delivering global business and technology solutions and creating sustainable value for stakeholders, Accenture served as the strategic consulting partner to USA for UNHCR in supporting the creation and sustainability of this partnership.

Accenture also selected USA for UNHCR for the Accenture Innovation Challenge – a national competition that challenges students at leading MBA schools in the U.S. to develop solutions to real-world challenges faced by nonprofit organizations. Participating students developed innovative strategies to utilize USA for UNHCR’s analytics and targeted campaigns to engage individuals to take action in support of refugees.

OUR PARTNERS

Airbnb

Airbnb partnered with USA for UNHCR for its #BelongAnywhere campaign, a global effort to raise awareness and funds in support of refugees. Founded on Airbnb’s mission to create a world where people can feel like they belong anywhere they go, the campaign utilized multiple fundraising efforts on social media, web and mobile platforms.

As a result, the #BelongAnywhere campaign increased humanitarian aid support through the provision of core relief items such as food, water, medicine and shelter, along with refugee safety and protection services. Additionally, Airbnb committed to assist relief workers through its travel credits program and provide temporary accommodations to refugee families through its existing network of hosts.

Alkhayyat Foundation

Since 2015, USA for UNHCR has received grants from the Alkhayyat Foundation to support efforts to help Syrian refugees during the winter months. The Foundation is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization working for a better future for vulnerable and underserved communities in the Middle East.
Following the immense success of its first engagement with USA for UNHCR, Alkhayyat Foundation has continued with matching grants to energize our generous donors. Through these efforts, Alkhayyat helped to provide double the number of much-needed blankets, stoves and heaters, cash assistance and winter clothes to Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.

“UNHCR was the ideal organization to rapidly deliver aid to those who need it the most. We look forward to continuing this great partnership and to augmenting our support to the Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons,” said Moutaz Alkhayyat, chairman of the Foundation.

Autodesk

Launched in 2014 by its parent company, Autodesk, the Autodesk Foundation invests in and supports impactful organizations using the power of design to address global challenges, including climate change, access to water and healthcare, and the refugee crisis. The Autodesk Foundation generously donated its signature AutoCAD software to help UNHCR provide safe, dignified and sustainable settlement options to refugees. The software is a valuable tool for settlement planning and the design capacity work critical to site planning for refugee shelters. The Autodesk Foundation also provided expert training support to UNHCR staff to ensure that the software is fully optimized.

The Foundation to Decrease World Suck

The Foundation to Decrease World Suck, founded by UNHCR High-Profile Supporter John Green, along with his brother Hank Green, organizes Project for Awesome, an annual initiative that brings thousands of people together to post videos online advocating for charities and raising funds to support vital causes. In 2015 and 2016, as thousands of people were fleeing their homes to seek safety and refuge, John Green reached out to the Project for Awesome community, affectionately named “nerdfighters,” to help support the lifesaving work of UNHCR. Remembering the tragedy and family of Alan Kurdi, he vlogged “to talk about the refugee crisis we need statistics, but let us not forget what is precious.”

In 2015, UNHCR was a designated beneficiary of Project for Awesome, resulting in a grant to support UNHCR’s lifesaving work. In the 2016 Project for Awesome initiative, the nerdfighter community submitted their own videos and as a result of members’ votes for the videos celebrating UNHCR’s work, additional support for refugees was awarded.

Google

Following an outstanding fundraising and matching campaign for the European refugee crisis in 2015, Google continued its strong support for refugees in 2016 through several fundraising initiatives, including a campaign that was prominently featured on the Google home page for World Refugee Day in June. In September, Google.org also highlighted the “Google Response for Refugees” on its homepage along with a donation button for users. The funds raised through Google’s efforts provide critical assistance such as food, water, shelter, medicine and lifesaving services to refugees.

The Khaled Hosseini Foundation

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Khaled Hosseini is the author of bestselling novels including The Kite Runner and a passionate advocate for refugees. Since 2008, Hosseini’s foundation has made grants totaling over $963,000 to support Afghan refugees. The Khaled Hosseini Foundation supports projects providing humanitarian assistance for the people of Afghanistan, including economic opportunities, education and health for women and children, and the construction of permanents homes for refugees. In 2017, the Khaled Hosseini Foundation is supporting the cash grant program for refugees returning to Afghanistan.

LDS Charities

In recent years, Latter-day Saints Charities supported USA for UNHCR with grants and in-kind donations that reached refugees and vulnerable people seeking safety. The organization’s giving is diverse and generous, providing relief for headline crises as well as reaching people whose plights receive less attention.

“Latter-day Saints Charities has been privileged to partner with USA for UNHCR in providing life-sustaining care to refugees in many areas of the world,” said Bruce Muir, LDS Director of Emergency Response. “UNHCR’s global reach and extensive resources helps LDS Charites to expand its reach to alleviate the suffering and misery of persons forced to leave homes and make do in unfamiliar, traumatic circumstances.”

In Europe, LDS Charities funded UNHCR’s emergency shelters and access to healthcare. Last winter LDS Charities ensured that more than 54,000 Syrian refugees and displaced Iraqis received much needed items to remain warm and dry. And in Africa, LDS Charites donated clothing and provided refugees with access to clean water.

TOMS

For refugee children, a good pair of shoes can mean much more than simple comfort. Shoes protect health, boost confidence and, when provided by TOMS, help refugee parents afford other basic necessities for their families.

Through USA for UNHCR, TOMS makes a tangible difference in the daily lives of refugee children in Uganda’s Kyangwali refugee settlement, the challenging Sahel region in Burkina Faso and the Nyarugusu camp in Tanzania. Since 2012, the TOMS-USA for UNHCR partnership has helped thousands of children avoid contact with harmful sand flea parasites and prevent disease when they walk to school and play.

Through USA for UNHCR and several other partners, TOMS has given more than 2.5 million pairs of new shoes to support refugee and displaced children throughout Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

UPS

In an emergency it is important to have logistics partners you can count on. A long time committed partner, UPS tirelessly helps UNHCR improve logistical and emergency responses to deliver aid more effectively. Additionally, the UPS Foundation, which leads the global citizenship programs for UPS, generously provides cash donations, which allows UNHCR to enhance its operations in carrying out aid and services to refugees. UPS has provided immediate humanitarian assistance in crisis situations, including in the aftermath of the Ecuador earthquake in 2016 and the massive displacement of people in Mosul, Iraq to due to increased regional conflict. Time and again, UPS has deployed its air and sea cargo fleet to transport humanitarian aid supplies such as tents, kitchen sets, sleeping mats and blankets to refugees around the world. This year, UPS deepened its commitment to refugees when it posted a global supply chain manager to UNHCR’s global fleet operation in Kenya, further illustrating how UPS is able to lend its resources in supporting UNHCR’s work in the field.

Zakat Foundation of America

In 2017, the Zakat Foundation of America responded to the needs of displaced Iraqis seeking safety and facing freezing temperatures, rain and snow.

“We are concerned and troubled by the high level of causalities and trauma from Mosul, Iraq,” said the foundation’s Director of Programs, Kemal Birru. “Zakat is pleased to partner with USA for UNHCR to provide emergency response to the people affected by the conflict.”

The Zakat Foundation awarded a generous grant of $50,000 to ensure that 664 families in Iraq received much-needed winter supplies as part of winterization efforts to keep vulnerable families warm and dry. With the support from the Zakat Foundation and other donors, UNHCR’s interventions ensured there was no major deterioration of health and living conditions during the harsh winter period.
