Bringing Aid — and Hope — to Rukban

More than 40,000 people, mostly women and children, call a settlement in Rukban, Syria home. The settlement consists of hundreds of makeshift shelters with no running water. Still worse, the region’s cold winter rains have transformed the normally dry, arid desert, into a maze of nearly impassable muddy roads.

Hope is as scarce as other crucial resources in Rukban, but — thanks to our donors — that’s beginning to change.

Recently, UNHCR — the UN Refugee Agency — completed one of the largest humanitarian operations inside Syria since the start of the Syrian crisis eight years ago. More than 100 trucks loaded with aid were sent to Rukban, along with 300 humanitarian workers. The convoy brought food, medicine, medical equipment, winter clothing, shelter materials and other desperately needed resources to a community struggling to survive.

Partnering with other humanitarian groups to ensure aid made it to those most in need, UNHCR was able to offer displaced people a respite from their day-to-day struggles. Hungry children received nutritional supplements and families received food, clothing and shelter to get them through the harsh winter months.

Without the support of our donors, none of this is possible.

However, the displaced people in Rukban and other hard to reach places need more help. They lack access to healthcare, nutritious food, clean water and sanitation. But with continued support from donors, displaced people in hard to reach areas will receive the help they need to survive.
