The following is attributable to Mr. Matthew Reynolds, UNHCR Representative to the United States and the Caribbean:
Washington, DC - UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, welcomes the decision by the United States to admit up to 125,000 refugees for resettlement over the course of the fiscal year starting October 1, 2022.
This will offer a chance to refugees who are in some of the most vulnerable situations in the world to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity in the United States after being forcibly uprooted from their homes. It is a reaffirmation of the essential compassion for people in need of life-saving protection for which the government and the people of the United States have long been known. It also sets a simple, strong example of translating humanitarian principle into policy for others to follow.
Refugee resettlement saves lives. UNHCR applauds this decision by the United States and we stand ready to support the government, civil society, refugees themselves and the many others involved in helping implement it as fully as possible in the coming year.
